"You're young until you're not
You love until you don't
You try until you can't
You laugh until you cry
You cry until you laugh
And everyone must breathe
Until their dying breath"
-On the Radio
Here is a post dedicated to the first musician I ever found interest in and still have interest in. Regina Spektor, born Реги́нa Ильи́нична Спе́ктор, captured my ears at age 11 while I was surfing through my dad's iPod I found Apres Moi. It seemed so beautiful and intense than the songs on the radio or the ones that my friends told me to like. The lyrics were simultaneously mysterious and confusing, but also thoughtful and personal. I asked my dad about it, and he told me the story behind the song. The title and main lyric in it "Apres Moi le déluge" means "After me, the flood." Which essentially means that saying it implies that you are the end of the world. I really like that. Her lyrics are so poetic. And she writes them all herself. She plays the instruments, sings it- she is the whole package. That's the other cool thing about her- being that whole package she is still herself. She didn't sound like anyone then. Other people have copied her, but she didn't sound like anyone else. She doesn't have a specific style, she says, but she still does. And it is beautiful.
"It doesn't feel natural for me to write some diary type song. I want to write a classic like Yesterday but weird songs about meatballs in refrigerators come into my head – I can't help it."
Isn't that perfect? Answer: Yes.
Anyway, here is her wonderfulness:
