Anti-Mall

Every late summer/ early fall all forms of media are being used to broadcast one thing: back to school shopping. Shopping for clothes, school supplies, furniture (?), and all sorts of things that don't even have to do with education. Most of the time in the past I have been thrilled to go to the mall for a new outfit but this year I'm not really. I've grown to find that I only go to the mall now to window shop and check out  Barnes&Noble. If I'm going to shop, I go to Goodwill or Target or some little second hand shop. I can find more unique stuff there for way cheaper!
...
So this year I've decided to go Anti-Mall. This is just something I've made up, but I'm not going to buy from a mall for the rest of this year. The problem with malls is they know they have an audience, one that is waiting hungrily for the next trend, so they know that they can charge more. As a result? More often than not you see several girls wearing the same American Eagle shirt on the same day.  I personally prefer the mystery of no one knowing where I got my skirt as opposed to someone saying "Oh, I saw that skirt in Maurices! Cute!"

I am not ashamed of Goodwill. When I was younger and didn't live near a mall with a Hollister I was incredibly jealous of all the hip little girls in my class who strutted in every day wearing not only Hollister but Aeropostale, American Eagle, and H&M. I had nice clothes, but I didn't have their clothes. I didn't want to tell anyone that I had gotten this t-shirt from Salvation Army or Old Navy. Now? Now if someone asks I will ask them exactly where I got it. I will feel proud for coming up with something that looks just as good for less money. It's not the brand of clothes that counts it's whether or not that person has style. A person can have all the designer clothes or mall brand clothes they want and not know how to wear it at all. It all depends on how you rock it I think. And my way to rock is second-hand.

Things I'm working on right now

Bracelet making- A while back I was really into jewelry making but I wasn't all that good at it. My designs always fell apart or were pointy or didn't look right so I put my supplies away. Then I found it again and Heavens to Betsy I didn't realize how addictive it is! I've since grown a better sense of crafting and quality so I can actually wear what I make! I now have a shoe box filled with all the various bracelets and rings I have made!
Knitting-I'm just a beginner at knitting and I only have one ball of yarn so all my projects in this area are pretty limited. I made my friend a headband, I knit a sleeve for my flute case handle, and I made this sweet cuff! I wear it quite a bit around the house-it's so cozy! It warrants some weird looks but only because they are jealous.
Comic- Yes, I've actually started a comic after all my yammerings about being a graphic novelist/designer. I'm worried about talking about it for fear that it won't work out and everyone will wonder what happened. I'm not going to reveal my plot lines but here are my main character designs.

Mini paintings- It's my goal to finish 30 mini paintings before the end of summer. I do it with watercolors and sharpies in a little sketchbook I got in Boise, Idaho. It's a weirdly relaxing process and I've already got 5 done! It's smallish accomplishments like this that bring me joy. When I'm done I'm going to put them all up on my walls.
So that's what I'm working on right now.I'm a person who needs structure in her life or she wil become listless, lethargic, and insane I love summer because I have more time to myself free to be creative and make.  I'm always reading and looking online and looking around that I just take in massive amounts of inspiration. I would be stupid and probably explode if I didn't make anything out of all that I'm taking in. THREE CHEERS TO SHARPIES, GLITTER, AND YARN! THREE CHEERS TO CRAFT-A-PALOOZA! THREE CHEERS TO PINTEREST AND HOW TO BOOKS!

The Smiling Buisness

In the August 2015 issue of the New Era- a Mormon youth magazine that I read- there was one particular story that I loved. It's a challenge called "Make ten people smile today!"  "Ten smiles. Twenty-four hours. Are you ready to take the challenge?" Then there were stories by teens who had taken the challenge. One particular girl's story was especially interesting.

"I'd like to consider myself a professional in the smiling business. I know what it takes to make people smile. It didn't take much to make my basketball teammate smile when I yelled, 'You got it, Marty!' from across the gym. I t took a bit more to make one of the customers I was working with at my grocery store smile after they told me they were having a bad day. But talking with them a bit and joking about the cold weather quickly set those eyes sparkling. I think most people are searching for a reason to smile. Sometimes, though, in this tricky world, it's a bit difficult to find a reason for a moment of happiness. Isn't it wonderful that we get an opportunity to be the reason to smile? I think it is. Even if I'm not an artist or a child prodigy; even if I'm not written about in history books; and even if no one else remembers me but the little girl who was so excited because I like the color of her shirt, I still have my smile. And I'm more than happy to pass it on. Why don't you do the same?"                  Allie V., Nebraska, USA

I think what struck me the most here was the part where she says "Even if I'm not an artist or a child prodigy;even if I'm not written about in history books...I still have my smile." We don't have to be talented by the world's definition of talent. Our skills are not limited to us being a good painter, soccer player, or anything else like that. We have simpler talents that can affect people in much more profound ways.
Personally I am not always the best student. I have several crossed wires in my brain and I'm not always very diligent. I may be horrible at math and taking notes, but I have a talent for having empathy. I know how to understand a person and help them based on that. This may not be seen as a real skill but these are essentials to us being friends, siblings, children, parents, or leaders.
I love the idea of being remembered in this way. Being remembered for being kind rather than all of my accomplishments. If it serves others, what is a better way to be remembered?
